Phenomenology of the Inapparent: On the Phenomenological Method and the Virtual Life

Description

This research aims to elucidate the features of the Phenomenological method as a way for describing the complete range of phenomena including limit- phenomena. This approach shows the internal consistency of the methodological developments in Phenomenology and, on this basis, offers an answer to the objections of lack of radicality arisen in the studies about the latent or inapparent. The figure of Marc Richir constitutes a peculiar case that illustrates the force of this line. This approach provides relevant material to comprehend a case of inapparency related to the virtual realm that traverses contemporary life. Indeed, Phenomenology, which has provided the notion of Lifeworld, is an especially appropriate tool to explore also the digitalised world.

The general hypothesis holds that what has been interpreted as an indication of the internal disruption of Phenomenology, i.e. accusations of the incompleteness of the Husserlian analyses and the limitations of the intentional structure, is actually a sign of flexibility and capacity to account for phenomenality in all their deployments. It is possible, therefore, to review the method and include among the different approaches a Phenomenology of the Inapparent in order to develop a novel approach to the digitalisation of the world revealing its place in the general plexus of phenomena, pointing out the role of the virtual dimension and the hyper-complexity of life, their fundamental links, and their central role in accounting for human experience.

Biography

Hernán G. Inverso (PhD in Philosophy) is a Researcher at the National Scientific and Technical Research Council (Argentina), and he teaches Gnoseology at the University of Buenos Aires. He has been a Fellow of the University of Buenos Aires, CONICET, the German Academic Exchange Service, and the Fulbright Commission. Currently he is working as a Fellow of the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions at the Université Libre de Bruxelles. He has published books among them El mundo entre paréntesis. Una arqueología de las nociones de reducción y corporalidad-The World between Brackets. An Archaeology of the Notions of reduction and corporeality- (Buenos Aires, 2015) and Fenomenología de lo inaparente -Phenomenology of the Inapparent- (Buenos Aires, 2018), winner of the Mercier Prize 2020 (KU Leuven – UCLouvain) , and numerous articles in international journals of Philosophy. He leads a research project at the University of Buenos Aires on phenomenology and corporeality and a research project on phenomenological methodology at the National Agency for Scientific and Technological Promotion (ANPCyT).
